Princess

I was enjoying a well deserved glass of nice Pinot the other night when a girlfriend dropped by to share a glass and some conversation. Approximately half way through her glass of wine, she began her rant.......the latest boyfriend was just not working out. She did not feel like he worked hard enough to show his love towards her and meet her needs. As she went on and on, it struck me that a woman of her mid forties could act like a clueless twenty year old.

Suddenly I blurted out with out thinking, "You enjoy the Princess role don't you?". She smiled and responded that she did. And I responded with, "How is that working for you?"

You see a strange thing happens as time passes. Women learn to enjoy and even embrace the power of their sexuality and appeal to men. It becomes habit but like all habits if not kept in check it can become as corrosive as addiction.

About forty years of age, there is a subtle change in momentum. At this pivotal point, the pendulum of power so slightly shifts towards men. It is so subtle neither gender notices but like water carving a river to the ocean the next journey begins.

After that pivotal point, it gains momentum as time moves toward the half century mark . The women still caught up in the demanding " princess" mode begin to look like true man haters. You see at this point in life, if you are too much trouble, you really are too much trouble. As you seek to partner with a man you deem worthy of a princess, this woman discovers these men can easily date two decades below their age with a woman yes that is a lot of trouble but she still possesses the attributes of youth that the man will accept as part of the too much trouble equation.

As I listened to my friend bemoan yet another inevitable dissolution of a relationship, she never thought that her best role was that of a friend .....a confidant....a partner. Men, I know that she seeks value those things over youth and vigor but when she places herself on the same playing field as a youthful twenty something year old.......reduces herself to the game of youth.......she will always lose.

Is it the fault of men? Or is it the fault of a woman that just never really grew in to the person she could be?

House cats will always be princesses ...........but the alley cat will always cross a street without being hit by traffic.

Find independence and then the rest will come along with respect and perhaps if you are lucky a nit of true love.  Time respects all but can we afford to disrespect time?

The Window Sill View

How many of these type do we know? The housecat which sits in its warm home, having every meal delivered on request and living a life of softness. Yet.......they yearn for more. They sit high in their window sill and spy a dark figure slipping along in the shadows with no concern about the cold wind or weather of any sort seems to concern this creature as it winds effortlessly along the way  to what life will present.......The Alley Cat!

People like cats are pretty much of two general types: the housecat and the alley cat.

The first being driven by security and comfort and the latter embraces the freedom of life with all of it's perils.

Which are you?
